The Pastor’s Quill

Have you ever watched any of the “Pirates Of the Caribbean” movies? I love those. I’ve always thought that would have been a really neat period of history to live in. I know the movies glamorize a lot. However, it was a time when men could explore the horizons of the world and explore the unexplored. I am a history buff. Having lived in the Charleston area for eleven years just fueled my fire for learning more about the local history of that historical city. One of the things of great interest to me was that the outlying islands near Charleston were some of the favorite lay-over spots for real, true-to-life pirates. For example, Seabrook Island was lair for Blackbeard the pirate.
We had a family who attended our church in Charleston who were great folks and very generous. They owned a neat little get-away spot out on the resort island of Seabrook. They would avail this cottage to Kim, the kids, and myself whenever we wanted a little place to vacate to for a few days. I would tell the kids the stories about the island being a favorite hiding spot for pirates and include the part about how it was assumed that there was probably buried treasure somewhere on the rustic, undeveloped island. When they were little, their eyes would dance with excitement as they would tell what they would do if they found this “hidden treasure.”
Hidden treasure. There is a thought. Who wouldn’t like to find some of that? One of the great aspects of this Christian walk is that every day we live, God gives us the ability to look for hidden treasure. Proverbs 25:2 states, “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings” (NIV). God conceals wisdom and revelation in His Scripture. Those things are “hidden treasure” to those who love God. To “search out” these treasured nuggets is a real treasure hunt indeed.
Get into God’s Word and ask Him to help you discover some of His “hidden treasure.”
